This Russian porcelain salt, pepper, and mustard set was made by Gardner of Verbelki in the 1990s. It features folk styling based upon the traditional Matryoshka dolls and includes the underplate.
Gardner of Verbelki was founded in 1766 by Francis Jacob Gardner, an English merchant living in Russia. It was the 1st private porcelain factory in Russia. During the 18th & 19th centuries, the company became one of the best private factories in Russia. It competed with the Imperial Porcelain factory and had a great influence on numerous private porcelain enterprises, becoming the model to emulate. After the 1917 revolution, it was taken over by the state and renamed as Dmitrov State Porcelain factory. After the fall of communism it was again renamed becoming Gardner Manufacture in Verbilki. It is an honorary member of the Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin.
