This is a Wager Cup, also known as a German Bridal Cup or a Jungfrauenbecher. These double cups originated in Germany in the 16th century and are used in wedding ceremonies.
Symbolism and Tradition
The cup is designed in the shape of a female figure whose skirt forms a large cup, and she holds a smaller, pivoting cup above her head.
During a wedding toast, the groom drinks from the larger cup (the skirt) while the bride simultaneously drinks from the smaller cup.
The tradition is rooted in a legend about a goldsmith who was challenged by a nobleman to create a cup from which two people could drink at the same time without spilling a drop in order to win the hand of the nobleman's daughter.
The act of drinking from the cup symbolizes love, faithfulness, and good luck for the newlywed couple.
