New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. G/VG. First edition, first issue of book with "A" on copyright page and "rer" for "her" on p. 59. The book has a slight slant, but the pages are tightly bound. Light soiling to brown cloth with gold lettering. Toning to fore-edges. The textblock has brackets marked in pen to paragraphs on pages 67, 68, 69, and 70; otherwise, it is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings, and is not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Toning to pages. The dust jacket is unclipped ($2.50) with chipping to spine ends and corners and light soiling and wear (see photos). Protected in a new Mylar cover. 304 pages. 5¼ x 7½".

A collection of 14 short stories that explore themes of fleeting time, mortality, memory, loss, alienation, and the search for meaning. Wolfe’s characteristic lyrical, sprawling, and intensely personal style permeates stories such as “Only the Dead Know Brooklyn", which highlights isolation and the search for permanence in a transient world.
